The Magic of Panto - Alex Toth

Panto is a great introduction to Theatre for kids. It has it all: a well-known story with a twist, suspense, jokes, music, dancing and encouragement to shout back to the characters on stage.

Classics like “Oh, no, it doesn’t!”, “Oh yes, it does!”, “They’re behind you!” and “Booooo!” can be uttered on a regular basis during the show. Our Dames especially are masters at interacting with the audience.

LPS Panto performances have proven themselves time and again to be a great day out for the young and the young at heart, having previously performed in all the news around Limerick City. From their humble beginnings at the Crescent Theatre to the Belltable, University Concert Hall, Lime Tree Theatre, and now TUS Millennium Theatre."

And kids, should you get inspired and wish to tread the boards yourselves, you might try to join one of the wonderful stage schools we’re cooperating with: Spotlight, Expressive Arts, and Gem Stars. You might be in the next Panto!

When Limerick Panto Society opened its first Production Cinderella in 1985 in The Crescent Hall we set up our

This year I will be playing the part of Buttons – I think people will agree with me

when I say that I won’t have to do much acting as it’s literally me in a nutshell!

Remember Limerick Panto throughout my life

The Limerick Panto Society is something I'm proud to be part of. Not only because of the immense talent showcased every year, but because of how well everyone works together, just like a family. When I did my first panto in 2012, I was incredibly nervous. I hadn't been on stage in years, and the idea of performing day after day in front of eager crowds made me sick to my stomach.

I remember on the first day of rehearsals, we sat down in a circle in front of Tony and Carol. As we listened, they introduced themselves and the Panto for that year, Beauty and the Beast. I immediately felt at ease, and the Cusack's warm and encouraging words had me raring to go. That Christmas went on to be the busiest and most exciting I had ever had.

Beauty and the Beast will always hold a special place in my heart, especially as this production was brought to life with the magic that was John Finn, my best friend’s Dad. His presence is dearly missed by all of us. Panto has given me some of my closest friends, people that I can't imagine going through life without, and for that I am very grateful.

Sunday evening rehearsals are something I look forward to every week. In those three hours, I forget about everything else and get lost in the excitement of a new routine or a song. It's a time when my friends and I get to come together and do something we love. I find that, no matter how tired I am, a smile is always on my face during these rehearsals. When the time comes for the shows. I feel ecstatic and ready to begin. At the same time. I feel sad knowing that we are closer to the end for another year. This year I will be making sure to savour every last minute, as these are the memories I will take with me throughout my life.

I have some great memories of doing the box office at the Crescent Theatre - I used to do this for a number of years during my school holidays. As time went on we moved to the Belltable Arts Centre, the University Concert Hall & The Lime Tree Theatre - where we had many successful Seasons
